Los Angeles Joe

Whenever I visit Los Angeles, there is a whole list of people I need to make time to see and catch up with. I’m not sure how it is in other places, but, in LA, the “thing to do” is “grab coffee.” So, by the end of a week’s vacation, I’ve “grabbed coffee” about a dozen times with a dozen different people! To keep things interesting, I love to explore different cafes, and I try not to visit the same place twice in one trip. Unsurprisingly, this leaves me with a unique mastery of all of LA’s trendy and cool cafes.

Here, I’ve compiled a list of some of my long-running favorites! (You’ve seen all of these locations tagged on my Instagram before, so you know I really visit these places)

1. Graffiti Sublime Coffee

Graffiti is located in my old neighborhood, where I used to live before I moved to New York. A trip here is like a trip to a coffee house and a modern art exhibit, all wrapped into one! It’s a super trendy, modern place to sit with your lap-top and get some work done–they even have a meeting room that you can reserve.

2. Kings Road Cafe

Unlike some of the newer cafes on this list, Kings Road has been around for more than 20 years. This place is super cozy and attracts a very unique, hip crowd (including tons of celebrity “regulars”). Featuring rustic, dark wood and an “old-timey” vibe, Kings Road Cafe will instantly become one of your favorites too!

3. Paper or Plastik Cafe

I’ll admit, I’ve probably tried more than 100 different iced chai lattes over the years (my drink of choice), but the best one I’ve ever had was at Paper or Plastik. Hands down. Paper or Plastik is family-run and super homey :) They use all seasonal and local ingredients to whip up their entire in-house menu, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

4. Little Next Door

If you live in Los Angeles, you’ll recognize this bright blue cafe as a popular destination. You’ve probably driven by the always-bustling Little Next Door on 3rd Street at some point and said to yourself, “I have to go there sometime.” In response, I say, Yes! You must! This charming French Brasserie is definitely one of my favorite places to hang out and relax.

5. Bottega Louie

I first heard about this place back in my FIDM days—the FIDM Los Angeles campus is located just a couple of blocks from Bottega Louie, and it quickly became one of my favorites! Famous for their decadent French macarons, it’s no wonder this upscale restaurant and cafe was such a hit with my trendy FIDM classmates.

6. Alfred {Coffee + Kitchen}

If you follow any LA-based bloggers, you’ve heard of Alfred’s. This coffee shop (and it’s ever-changing, quirky coffee cups) seem to be allover Instagram these days–so you know it’s a cool place :) Located on the most charming street in all of Los Angeles–Melrose Place–Alfred’s sets the tone for a perfect Sunday morning of sipping lattes and shopping the Melrose Place Farmer’s Market in your yoga leggings.

 7. Stir Market

Ok, I know I said I try not to visit a cafe multiple times on each trip, but sometimes I make an exception for Stir Market. In my defense, though, Stir isn’t just a cafe or a coffee shop; it’s an organic grocery store, a juice bar, a restaurant, and a flower market–all wrapped into one. Can an LA girl ask for more? :) Pro Tip: Make sure you try their cucumber mint lemonade! It’s heavenly.
